IN BRIEF

  • Explore the history of the Theatre Royal Drury Lane as they take you on a journey through the centuries of the beloved theatre.
  • Indulge in a delicious Cream Tea by legendary artisan baker, Lilli Vanilli
  • Enjoy all-day hop on, hop off Thames River pass offering unlimited access to the river for 24 hours.

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

The Theatre Royal Drury Lane is a legend in its own right. An extraordinary space that has survived tragedy, fire, bankruptcy—even murder. This tour is as dramatic as anything you will see on stage, as expert actors entertain you with stories of the building and theatrical life.

There is something magical about visiting a theatre without the audience. It is a privilege. This particular theatre has been renovated to the tune of 60 million pounds, and it oozes glamour. Immerse yourself in the birthplace of the musical and modern pantomime. Marvel at the moving scenery and walk the tunnels. Yes, there are tunnels.

Visit backstage areas, learn about the origins of theatrical terms, and keep an eye out for the ‘Man in Grey’—this is the world's most haunted theatre. His bones were discovered during theatre renovations in 1840, and you’ll hear about the ghosts who continue to walk the boards. So it’s ‘Beginner’s to the stage, please. This is your five-minute call. Stand by.’ An hour of immersion into an actor’s life. Break a leg.

TELL ME MORE - THE TEA

And then there is the tea. You will be surrounded by glamour from the moment you set foot into the art deco inspired, Cecil Beaton Bar.  Chandeliers, ornate ceilings, fine art, and beautiful furnishings create just the right backdrop for a Lily Vanilli tea. This is a tea inspired by the decadence and splendour of the Regency era. Prettiness personified.

Where to start?  Miniature crumpets with Earl Grey cream cheese; tiny little coronation chicken pies; frilly pastel-piped cakes; and ice cream sandwiches stacked with strawberry syrup and marshmallow all served on bone china whimsically designed by Kit and Willow Kemp.  This is a tea straight from Hackney's legendary artisan baker, Lily Vanilli.

Oh, and by the way, you also have access to an all-day Hop On Hop Off river cruise rover. So you could arrive by river and walk your way up to the theatre. How theatrical is that?

Picnic Cruise on the River in Oxford

A proper traditional wicker hamper, packed with treats to share as you float down the river. WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT? Well, for a start, it’s very quiet. This small, elegant river boat is electric and designed not to rattle you or the wildlife as you take the river route that Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell frequented when he wrote ‘Alice in Wonderland’.Travel past quaint Osney Island, with its allotments and gardens, ancient Port Meadow and Godstow, taking in stunning views of Christ Church meadows, the university boathouses, and the regatta course. This is Oxford at its picturesque best, seen from the river, which puts a completely different focus on its famous landmarks. It’s leisurely, intimate (no more than 12 passengers per cruise), and includes a short stop-off at a historic riverside pub. TELL ME MORE Well, there’s the picnic lunch, which of course always tastes miles nicer when it comes in a wicker hamper for you to unpack. The treats typically include finger sandwiches, tart of the day, homemade scones with cream and jam, washed down with elderflower presse. If you want other drinks, you can buy these on departure. Of course, there will be napkins, proper china, and glasses. This is a traditional picnic, and you wouldn’t settle for less. If it rains, there is an awning to keep you dry and tables for the picnic. Riverboat Cruise with Afternoon Tea in Oxford

Let yourself drift away while you indulge in a cream tea. There is nothing like a boat trip to explore the tranquility and beauty of river life. Add a sumptuous afternoon tea into the equation, and this becomes an outing to remember. WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT? These are small, intimate, electric cruisers, designed to silently putt-putt gently down the river via the university regatta course. Float gently past Christ Church meadows and the university college boathouses towards ancient Iffley Lock. Navigating a lock is part of any river adventure, but you can relax and let the captain sort out any dramas. Once through Iffley, you will travel on to the tranquil water meadows that surround Oxford, eventually turning around at Rose Island, a favourite destination of Lewis Carroll and Alice Liddell, to head on back to the moorings. But before then, there is the onboard tea… TELL ME MORE Expect a proper afternoon tea, with finger sandwiches, homemade scones with strawberry jam and clotted cream, followed by a selection of cakes, tarts, or petit fours. All you have to think about is whether to slap the cream on the scone before the jam, or after. If you want to take any other drinks with you, they can be purchased at the departure point. This is a very bucolic hour and a half through some of the most beautiful parts of Oxford. You will be entertained with some interesting tales from the riverbank (not too many, just enough) as you watch out for wildlife and engage with nature. The cruiser comes complete with an awning and tables for tea, so don’t stress about the weather or where to put the scones, just engage with the water.Remember ‘Mole,’ the small hero from ‘Wind in the Willows,’ who was so enamoured by the romance of the river he could only hold up his fore-paws and gasp, ‘Oh my! Royal Pavilion and Sparkling Cream Tea for Two at the Wine Cellar

Journey through an Eastern-inspired palace and then indulge in a luxurious cream tea. For two people.   WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?  Flamboyant and opulent, with a riot of domes, minarets and lavish interiors. No, we aren't in India, we are looking at The Royal Pavilion, a fantasy Palace designed for a King. It was built in Brighton, the most traditional of seaside resorts, and it was originally just that - a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales. The work started in 1787, and like all building work took some time to complete. John Nash, a theatre designer as well as an architect, took over in 1815, and extended the Pavilion to include the minarets. The architecture is unforgettable, mixing the visual styles of India and China.Wander through the rooms and marvel at the Chinese-inspired decor. Chinoiserie was very much in vogue and the influence can be seen throughout the rooms. This is where history and glamour collide in the most fabulous way. TELL ME MORE Tea will be waiting for you at The Wine Cellar, in Brighton. Cutty Sark with Afternoon Tea and a Hop-on Hop-off River Pass

Explore the Cutty Sark, treat yourself to afternoon tea & cruise The Thames. For Two people.   WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?  The fastest ship of its day. This British Clipper is only one of three left intact. She has been damaged by fire twice in recent years, but this boat is a survivor. It is now a working museum. Talk to the shipkeepers who maintain the decks, check out the rigging—you can even take the helm as you immerse yourself in the life of the ship. It actually sits in a dry dock, so you can even inspect the hull as the ship hovers above you.Built in 1869, this is a tea clipper. The Victorians loved their tea. It was a fashionable drink, and huge quantities were consumed. Sadly, the Cutty Sark only made eight voyages to China, due to the opening of the Suez Canal. The ship was unable to take advantage of the new shortcut due to wind conditions, but made up for the loss of the tea trade by pivoting into wool from Australia, needless to say, delivered in record time. TELL ME MORE But this boat was built as a tea clipper, and it's tea you will be enjoying in The Cutty Sark Cafe, located on the lower ground deck of the ship, underneath the copper-clad hull. Expect some rather good tea—English Breakfast, Earl Grey, Peppermint, Chamomile and Oriental Sencha—even the home scones come with a slight infusion of Earl Grey. Tea that a crew member back in 1869 could only dream of.Included in this experience is a 24-hour hop-on, hop-off river pass, so you can arrive and leave by boat. There are piers up and down the river, from Westminster to Greenwich. It's the perfect way to see London. A watery adventure. Kintsugi Workshop

A hands-on workshop where you'll be guided step by step on how to repair broken china using golden resin...   WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT? Learn how to mend once loved china and earthenware in this mindful introduction to the Kintsugi method. The visible repairs are seen as part of the history of an object, highlighting the cracks and symbolising fragility, strength and beauty. This golden repair is called Kintsugi.   WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS WORKSHOP?   The idea of this workshop is to repair a loved item, joining together the fractures using the Japanese Kintsugi method - applying the resin glue to the broken sections and making it whole once more. The imperfections aren’t to be hidden but embraced! The Kintsugi method celebrates the beauty of the scars in an object and recognises that the history should be shown and not hidden. Choose your broken porcelain (vase, bowl, plate or cup), and be taken by our resident Indytute expert, step by step through the technique of mending each section piece by piece. This is very much a thoughtful and methodical process….not to be rushed, where each piece is applied and repaired carefully.
