Journey through an Eastern-inspired palace and then indulge in a luxurious cream tea. For two people.
WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?
Flamboyant and opulent, with a riot of domes, minarets and lavish interiors. No, we aren't in India, we are looking at The Royal Pavilion, a fantasy Palace designed for a King. It was built in Brighton, the most traditional of seaside resorts, and it was originally just that - a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales. The work started in 1787, and like all building work took some time to complete. John Nash, a theatre designer as well as an architect, took over in 1815, and extended the Pavilion to include the minarets. The architecture is unforgettable, mixing the visual styles of India and China.
Wander through the rooms and marvel at the Chinese-inspired decor. Chinoiserie was very much in vogue and the influence can be seen throughout the rooms. This is where history and glamour collide in the most fabulous way.
TELL ME MORE
Tea will be waiting for you at The Wine Cellar, in Brighton. Yes, they do serve wine, but they also do a mean cream tea, with lashings of cream and jam (they won’t mind if you ask for extra). Expect the sparkling wine to be chosen with care, paired with a pot of tea.
Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside.
