FOUNDER STORY: The Science of Love

< Back to all posts

"So really, I’m not just the date night, gifting guru… I’m conducting a full-scale neuroscience experiment"

If only I'd known at 18 that love is really just a massive brain party—where dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin hit the dance floor. I might have done less sobbing into my margaritas…

26 years later, I'm thinking about Valentine's Day yet again and I’m all about expanding those neural pathways, firing up the brain’s reward system (how romantic of me), and strengthening relationships—not just in love, but in friendships, family, work.

The science is simple! Shared experiences create stronger bonds. The more we try new things together—whether it’s dancing, making pottery, foraging for wild food, or just sharing really great cheese—the more we fire up our brains' reward system, carve new neural pathways, deepen connection, and most importantly JOY (which is possibly the biggest, least talked about longevity hack!)

So really, I’m not just the date night, gifting guru… I’m conducting a full-scale neuroscience experiment. Now where’s my honorary doctorate? 🧠🎓

Anyway, that’s exactly what we do at The Indytute - micro experiences that help people connect in new, unexpected ways. Step out of routine and build relationships that last in love, friendship or business.

Above is a photo of us foraging for cockles, one of my top 5 things to do.  More of my favourite things to do >>

1. Foraging and Cocktails.  Listening to wild stories around a camp fire after an afternoon of foraging.  Foraged cocktails too of course!

2.  Pottery Workshop. One of my favourite memories with my partner was making pet bowls together. Perfect for recreating that 'Ghost' moment.

3. You can beat a huge plate of British cheese paired with sparkling wine and great conversation. You'll be looking out at the ducks as this experience is on a wonderful barge in Paddington.

4. Learn the harmonica. A brilliant, unusual experience for two. By the end of the hour and half you'll have learned to play a little instrument you can fit in your pocket - perfect for impromptue seranading.
