What's the big deal about Shoreditch?

Some places are easy to understand.

Shoreditch isn't one of them.

It's a neighbourhood built on curiosity. Turn one corner and you'll find a tiny gallery hidden above a coffee shop. Turn another and you're drinking cocktails in what looks suspiciously like somebody's living room.

People come for the street art, the food and the nightlife. They stay because Shoreditch has a habit of leading you somewhere unexpected.

So why is it called Shoreditch?

The short answer?

Nobody really knows.

The most famous theory involves Jane Shore, one of King Edward IV's mistresses, who supposedly met an unfortunate end in a ditch somewhere nearby.

Hence: Shore's Ditch.

Shoreditch.

Maybe.

Shoreditch

The trouble is there are several competing theories, and nobody has ever managed to prove any of them conclusively.

Which feels quite fitting, really.

Shoreditch has never been a place that likes neat explanations. For centuries it sat just outside London's city walls, attracting actors, artists, traders, rebels and anyone who preferred doing things their own way.

Shoreditch

Today you'll still find that same spirit. The buildings have changed, the coffee has become significantly more expensive, but Shoreditch remains London's natural home for people who are curious, creative and slightly allergic to doing things by the book.
