Explore royal masterpieces at The King's Gallery, then enjoy a two-course British lunch at the historic Royal Horseguards Hotel by the Thames. For two people.
WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?
See changing exhibitions from the Royal Collection. The exhibitions feature old master paintings, rare furniture, decorative arts and images from a vast photographic collection. The King's Gallery is located by Buckingham Palace, on the old site of a private chapel for Queen Victoria, the original chapel was destroyed in an air raid in 1940, and the gallery was designed specifically to house the Royal Collection in 1962.
One of the world's largest and most important art collections, there are over a million objects, reflecting the personal tastes of British kings and queens over the past 500 years. It is one of the last great European royal collections to remain intact. A visual delight for anyone interested in the arts and royalty.
TELL ME MORE
When you have completed the visit, it's time for a spot of lunch.
A short stroll along The Mall to The Royal Horseguards Hotel, which is situated by the Thames on the Embankment. Experience a bit of Victorian grandeur as you enter the building, a fitting venue after the museum. This experience is a two-course lunch so choose between starters and a main course, or a main course and pudding. There is a definite lean towards British fare - poached salmon, chicken supreme, Cambridge cream - the menu is seasonal so subject to change.
There's heaps of history behind the hotel too. It was once the National Liberal Club, and the club apartments provided a home for the first chief of Britain's Intelligence Service. It has been used for over twenty film locations, mostly spy dramas, including a couple of Bond films.
'Whitehall 1212' is the restaurant name and a world-famous phone number - Scotland Yard's in case you didn't know.
Art and lunch both savoured in grand surroundings. A day out to remember.
