Guided by a leading historian and a celebrated chef, this immersive evening blends food, theatre, storytelling and ritual in the candlelit surrounds of Cloth, one of the City’s most atmospheric restaurants. You will journey from the graveyard of St Bartholomew’s to a banquet inspired by centuries-old manuscripts, tasting the rich, surprising flavours of Britain’s lost cuisine. Expect actors, music, medieval customs, rainbow-hued wines and dishes presented with flair and irreverence. This is dining uplifted into performance, offering an unforgettable night of history, indulgence and revelry.

THE ALL IMPORTANT DETAILS

Your evening begins in the lantern-lit graveyard of St Bartholomew’s, where Dr Matthew Green sets the scene with a captivating introduction to medieval London, accompanied by a short performance from one of the actors. From there you wander towards Cloth, glowing with candlelight, and take your place at long communal tables for a banquet inspired by centuries-old manuscripts. Each course is presented by chef Jack Burke, who explains the origins, techniques and surprising flavours of Britain’s forgotten cuisine while dishes are carried in by cupbearers and servants to music and ritual.

Between courses you will be drawn into vivid stories of medieval city life, from fashion and food to the social world of those who lived in the surviving timber-framed houses around you. Expect chants, toasts, medieval aphorisms, a lively jester, rainbow-hued wines served from shared tureens and a final cup of spiced Hippocras. With all food and drink included, vegetarian options available and a playful reshuffle of seats partway through, this is a rich, theatrical and convivial celebration of England’s original cuisine.
