Step into the dark heart of historic London for an extraordinary medieval dining experience for two. Guided by a leading historian and a celebrated chef, this immersive evening blends food, theatre, storytelling and ritual in the candlelit surrounds of Cloth, one of the City’s most atmospheric restaurants. You will journey from the graveyard of St Bartholomew’s to a banquet inspired by centuries-old manuscripts, tasting the rich, surprising flavours of Britain’s lost cuisine. Expect actors, music, medieval customs, rainbow-hued wines and dishes presented with flair and irreverence. This is dining uplifted into performance, offering an unforgettable night of history, indulgence and revelry.
THE ALL IMPORTANT DETAILS
Your evening begins in the lantern-lit graveyard of St Bartholomew’s, where Dr Matthew Green sets the scene with a captivating introduction to medieval London, accompanied by a short performance from one of the actors. From there you wander towards Cloth, glowing with candlelight, and take your place at long communal tables for a banquet inspired by centuries-old manuscripts. Each course is presented by chef Jack Burke, who explains the origins, techniques and surprising flavours of Britain’s forgotten cuisine while dishes are carried in by cupbearers and servants to music and ritual.
Between courses you will be drawn into vivid stories of medieval city life, from fashion and food to the social world of those who lived in the surviving timber-framed houses around you. Expect chants, toasts, medieval aphorisms, a lively jester, rainbow-hued wines served from shared tureens and a final cup of spiced Hippocras. With all food and drink included, vegetarian options available and a playful reshuffle of seats partway through, this is a rich, theatrical and convivial celebration of England’s original cuisine.

I purchased this as a gift for my friends 40th and we had a great time! I could have spent all day upcycling china. Claire was a great host and help was on hand for any tricky bits! I would highly recommend this workshop.
The event was easy to book through the telephone once we had the code. The hotel was beautifully presented and the staff were excellent. The food was very typical of afternoon teas but there was only one each of four cakes where there is normally one of each. We added the glass of champagne and the whole meal passed of very well with no problems. We might have preferred a couple of extra cakes and only one scone each but that is probably a personal point.
Upon arrival at the reception desk all staff were polite and certainly made us feel welcome, we were ushered to our seats without any rush, the food was excellent from the starter, main and dessert with a complimentary Mocktail. Although there was only one choice of Mocktail our experience overall including the staff, the ambience of the dining area. Not to loud not too quiet.
We had a great time at the cheese barge. The afternoon tea option with prosecco for us was definitely the right move. We asked the server to recommend the cheese selection and he suggested going for all 15 on the menu, then we could choose extra of 5 that we liked. Great idea and worked out perfectly. The venue is qwerky so n a good way. We had a nice view of the canal. Would definitely go again.
Such a wonderful experience, my girlfriend and I loved every minute of this experience from touring Windsor Castle to the delicious afternoon tea at the Clarence tea room.
The teacher was most professional made the class very enjoyable and he was very patient kind and informative in a detailed manner. I would definitely go back there again.
