RATED 4.9 ACROSS 1,900 REVIEWS
Don't just take our word for it! We're rated 4.9 with over 1,900 reviews!
And you never knew it existed! This is a living museum in the heart of Horse Guards, Whitehall.
The headquarters of the Household Cavalry has remained broadly the same for 350 years. This is a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes on there. This really is a living museum with real people who do a real job.
Through a glazed partition you will see the troopers working with the horses in the original 18th century stables. The experience includes compelling personal stories and first-hand accounts of the training that goes on. You will be able to try on a replica of the iconic red jackets and learn about the uniforms. What are they made of? To braid or not to braid? White or red plume on the helmet? It is not that simple to dress like a Cavalryman.
The museum is filled with unique treasures from ceremonial uniforms to silverware by Faberge. It’s a small museum, you will probably go round it in an hour, but it's a real privilege to get up close and personal with the King’s bodyguard.
YOUR LUNCH
When you have completed the visit it’s time for a spot of lunch. A short stroll along The Mall, to The Royal Horseguards Hotel, which is situated by the Thames on the Embankment. Experience a bit of Victorian grandeur as you enter the building, a fitting venue after the museum. This experience is a two-course lunch so choose between starters and a main course, or a main course and pudding. There is a definite lean towards British fayre - poached salmon, chicken supreme, Cambridge cream - the menu is seasonal so subject to change.
There’s heaps of history behind the hotel too. It was once the National Liberal Club, and the club apartments provided a home for the first chief of Britain’s Intelligence Service. It has been used for over twenty film locations, mostly spy dramas, including a couple of Bond films.
‘Whitehall 1212’ is the restaurant's name and a world-famous phone number - Scotland Yard’s in case you didn’t know.
All in all a grand lunch and a grand day out.
