Forage, feast & chill — hunt wild food then tuck into a local feast.

WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

At the start of the day, you will be given a briefing on the safety, ethics, and etiquette of foraging, and also the laws, for yes, there are laws around foraging.  It is also about taking what you need and not just grabbing at everything you see.

The walk will cover about 3-4 kilometers of paths, as you search out edible wild species and learn how to spot poisonous look-alikes from a professional forager.  This is obviously a very important part of any foraging experience.  This is a chance to slow down, meet new people, and reconnect with nature. There are lots of flavours to be discovered in our hedgerows, and even if you never pick another leaf from the wild, you will have learned a lot about our native plants and sustainability.

The feast at the end of the day will have been prepared in advance by your tutor - and it is a feast.  Menus are seasonal, often consisting of over 30 different wild ingredients.  There will be up to five different courses, and two drink options, so you will be able to taste the extraordinary flavours that nature provides.  How does nettle and wild fennel quiche sound?  A wild garlic pesto, pickled hogweed with braised pigeon breast, wild parasol mushroom risotto and roasted chestnuts - you get the idea.  It will certainly inspire you to get out there and discover the bounty on your doorstep.

These foraging workshops are held all over the Northwest, from The Wirral to Sheffield. They run from Spring through to Autumn.  The maximum number of people in any group is 25, and the events run from Wednesday through to Sundays.  Regular events are held at each of their locations, only changing if the land needs a ‘rest.’

I would highly recommend booking onto one of the sessions. I had a fabulous time with Jim at the surroundings of Dunham Massey where we explored different foraging techniques, sampled foraged food and even ended the day with a more substantial meal using things we had foraged as a group. It is great for all ages and you don’t need to be an expert. I’m looking forward to booking on another event!

An excellent, informative session from Joel whose enthusiasm and knowledge was exceptional. His delivery made the time pass really quickly. The quantity of species that we found was quite overwhelming for what is our local park. Great tasty focaccia and wild flower chocolate that tasted as good as it looked. Would certainly recommend to others and return at another season. Thanks.

Me and my boyfriend went on the forage and feast session and had a wonderful time at Arley Hall, led by the enthusiastic Jim. We would highly recommend to others.

It was a brilliant day, with an excellent tutor. He clearly knows his foraging, but brings with this an inclusivity and an attention to detail, without being at all dry. And everything was tailored to the environment we were in, making for a great experience on the day, while also including information about where we might be going on our own walks. His focus on sustainability and kindness really stand out. And, the food at the end was excellent! Beautifully presented, completely delicious - obv...

I attended the full foraging day with my friend to celebrate her birthday. The experience was exceptional and our guide was so knowledge and gave so much helpful information. The highlight was the foraged feast provided at the end. I would certainly recommend to others and will most likely book onto another one in the future!

Jim's knowledge and enthusiasm for foraging made the day really interesting. The picnic that he had prepared was a feast of flavours. We also had the opportunity to do our own foraging in a beautiful setting: while learning what was good to eat
