WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

Set in the heart of Sussex, and home to the Millennium Seed Bank, Wakehurst is an exquisite 500-acre site. Wakehurst is a living plant collection. Curated to accentuate the natural landscape, the plants are grown for research, conservation, and ornamental displays. They form the most diverse collection of any botanic garden in the world. Some of the plants are extinct in the wild. These gardens form cutting-edge research into conservation, and this garden showcases a living collection of exotic trees and woodland plants.

This is not an arboretum, but it does turn into a 'Woodlands of the World' walk as you stroll through North American trees, Southern Hemisphere trees, and the national collection of silver birches. A paradise for tree lovers, and everyone else who loves to walk through nature.

There are two gardens on this walk. It's only a 12-minute drive from Wakehurst to Borde Hill. Here you can wander around the formal 'Garden Rooms'. Whether you are a fan of David Austin roses (there are 750 on display here), or you love lily pools complete with Italian planting, there really is a room to touch every soul. Dells and potting sheds, borders and lawns, these immersive spaces will take you on a gardening journey. This is a fabulous garden, and if you visit the shop (and who doesn't visit the shop?) you can take home a piece of Borde Hill to plant in your own garden - there's a rather delicious glasshouse café and restaurant too, so you are covered from all sides.

Start at Wakehurst and then motor over for an afternoon at Borde Hill. A gardener's delight, you can just park the non-gardeners in the café and catch up with them later, but these gardens are so special and diverse they won't want to be left behind.

Even four-legged friends are allowed in both gardens, but short leads, and bizarrely, not on the flower beds!
