WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

The Tower of London is history. History in all its gory detail. A fortress, an infamous prison and a Royal Palace. Nothing disappoints. At one time there was a Royal menagerie roaming the ramparts and the moat. The Tower housed exotic wild animals never seen before in London. It was really the first zoo. The King of France donated an elephant to add to the collection. Sadly, the animals, like the prisoners at the Tower, did not last long in the cramped, unnatural conditions. The Menagerie eventually closed for good in 1835, and the remaining animals were dispatched to a new home in Regent's Park.

There is history at every turn, and in every rampart. Your imagination really doesn't have to work at all; the Tower does it all for you. From William the Conqueror onwards, the Tower has been a stronghold. The fact that it is in the middle of London makes it all the more extraordinary.

The fare is traditional Mediterranean and all the produce is locally sourced. There are two courses, and you can choose between a starter and a main course, or a main course and a dessert. The atmosphere is light and bright, but still a testament to London's history. Back in 1905, this hotel served as a police station, and the restaurant floor was home to 22 holding cells. Hence the name 'Shakedown'.

The voucher and booking were very easy to obtain and book. The venues were excellent nominal waiting time at the Tower of London had to wait for restaurant to open at 6pm which left us a bit in a rush for the theatre to see Wicked at 7.30 pm so we didn't have our 3rd course. Good service but the drinks were very expensive at the restaurant so maybe not such a good deal although the food was excellent

We visited on one of the hottest and busiest days of the year. Tower of London was excellent but we should have planned for a longer visit due to the queues for each of the exhibits. Buyers beware of the details - the Shakedown is a restaurant in a hotel lacking in atmosphere, we had looked at the menu ahead of time and were excited, however the menu that comes with this package is different and has very limited choices. A hot but enjoyable day but next time would buy just a Tower experience and...
