WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?

The lift takes you up (phew) to the high-level walkway, where you can enjoy stunning London views from a great height. Are you brave enough to cross the glass walkway? The glass took six weeks to put in place and can hold the weight of 6 elephants - it's just getting them up there that's the problem.

You will be standing 42 metres above the Thames and the view of the river is a marvel. Learn about the history of this iconic landmark as you read about the construction of this world-famous bridge and visit the Victorian Engine Rooms, complete with the original steam engines that once powered the bridge.

This is a feat of engineering to capture your imagination, as you learn the social details of the workers that built and laid the foundations. The stokers, the watchmen and cooks that kept the whole operation going. They are remembered with bronze plaques set into the pavement. Follow the blue line.

Food is next on the list, as bridge walking leaves you in need of a refuel. The Shakedown restaurant serves Mediterranean dishes, using locally sourced British ingredients. Italian cuisine with local produce, an ideal combination. Enjoy two courses from the menu. Creamy Burrata with parma ham? Smokey mushroom and black truffle tagliatelle? You get the idea. Timeless classics in modern surroundings.

This restaurant is very near to Tower Bridge, and the hotel where the restaurant is located once served as a police station, hence the name 'Shakedown' - but don't worry, this was back in 1905, but it shows that everywhere in the city there are living testaments to its intriguing past.
