Discover the Royal Mews’ historic coaches and horses, then enjoy a two-course British lunch in the elegant Royal Horseguards Hotel. For Two people.
WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?
The headquarters of the Household Cavalry has remained broadly the same for 350 years.
This is a behind-the-scenes look at the work that goes on there. It is also home to the Royal collection of historic coaches and carriages. It has been the location of the sovereign's transport since 1760.
There's the spectacular Diamond Jubilee State Coach and the Australian State Coach which includes central heating. Every coach needs central heating. If you think you have seen them on television already, be prepared to be amazed. Look out for horses. Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays are used to pull the carriages and they are chosen for their steady temperament and stamina. During your visit, you can see the livery worn by the King's Coachmen - different liveries for different occasions, and the workmanship is plain to see.
This visit will change the way you view State occasions.
TELL ME MORE
When you have completed the visit, it's time for a spot of lunch.
A short stroll along The Mall to The Royal Horseguards Hotel, which is situated by the Thames on the Embankment. Experience a bit of Victorian grandeur as you enter the building, a fitting venue after the museum. This experience is a two-course lunch so choose between starters and a main course, or a main course and pudding. There is a definite lean towards British fare - poached salmon, chicken supreme, Cambridge cream - the menu is seasonal so subject to change.
There's heaps of history behind the hotel too. It was once the National Liberal Club, and the club apartments provided a home for the first chief of Britain's Intelligence Service. It has been used for over twenty film locations, mostly spy dramas, including a couple of Bond films.
'Whitehall 1212' is the restaurant name and a world-famous phone number - Scotland Yard's in case you didn't know.
All in all, a grand lunch and a grand day out.
