- Afternoon tea at the newly refurbished, Hotel Metropole
WHAT'S THIS ALL ABOUT?
A jolly day out by the sea. Up, up and away. See Brighton and the south coast in a whole new light from a glass viewing pod. Yes, the creators of The London Eye have set their sights on Brighton and Hove.
This is not a wheel, oh no. This is a doughnut-shaped glass pod, which acts as a lift and a viewing platform. This is very clever stuff. You will be carried up in the pod, and enjoy panoramic views from start to finish.
On a clear day you can see all the way over to the Isle of Wight - over 49 miles away. It’s tall, eccentric and exuberant as well as being very tall. This is a brilliant observation tower. If you fancy a tipple as you travel, there is an excellent bar onboard, specialising in drinks from local suppliers.
There’s more to see before tea. This ticket includes an entrance to The Brighton Pavillion. This mad Royal Pleasure Palace was built as a seaside retreat for George, Prince of Wales in 1787. Apparently, it was thought the sea air would be of benefit for his gout.
The current appearance with its domes and minarets is the work of architect John Nash, who extended the original building in 1815. It was sold to Brighton in 1850 after Queen Victoria decided she didn’t like it - too public apparently. Her loss, our gain.
Now for tea. The Hotel Metropole is the newly refurbished venue. Victorian and elegant. Just what you would expect on the Brighton seafront. The tea menu is also elegant. Savoury sandwiches, tarts and eclairs jostle for position on the table, alongside the scones - fruity and plain. There is also an awesome tea leaf collection, everything from builders to Jasmine Pearls. A proper tea.
Jam on top or cream? You decide.
