Dame Agatha Christie was a mystery in her own right. Born in Torquay, Devon, she was home-schooled, and like many famous writers before her was rejected by various publishers, before finally finding success with her creation of a Belgian detective sporting a waxed moustache. In 1926, she made international headlines by going missing for eleven days. What she was up to is a mystery that was never fully solved, but 1,000 police officers were engaged in the search, before she was finally located.

More than 30 feature films have been based on her work, and her stage play 'The Mousetrap' holds the world record for the longest-running play.
